Labor Day isn’t just an excuse to have a Monday off of work. It also marks the end of summer, the last day we’re allowed to wear white, and the beginning of the NFL football seasons. Plus, it’s a great excuse to lounge around at a barbecue before the weather gets too cool. But the most exciting part of Labor Day are all the great sales that come with it.

Labor Day Weekend is the last major holiday before Thanksgiving, so early birds who prefer to avoid Black Friday sales and do their shopping in advance may be on the lookout for holiday gifts starting September.     My mac is not Upgraded to the Mac OS X Leopard. Can I buy the Leopard Snow for it?

    Best Answer

    As previews posters noted, the processor is the key. All things said, you could still change your feline and tame the 10.5 Leopard if feeling a bit left behind with Tiger.
    Just make sure to stay away from the snow if your Mac has a PowerPC processor.

    If your iMac has 10.5.8, then you have Mac OS X Leopard. The .8 in 10.5.8 means there have been 8 updates applied to the base 10.5.0 version. Mac OS X Snow Leopard is version 10.6 which you do not currently own, but can be purchased for $29 from any Apple Store.

    As far as your question of benefits to upgrading, yes there are some new features and fixes in Mac OS X Snow Leopard† that many will find beneficial. You do need to be sure your iMac meets the system requirements, which mainly is that it contains an Intel processor.

    For your final question on Word, you have some options. Microsoft has released Microsoft Office for OS X, which can be purchased in an Apple Store. Also you can use OS X’s Boot Camp feature if you would like to run Word natively in Windows. Finally, you can look into virtualization software. Some examples of these are VMWare Fusion, and Parallels.

    Yes you can. Any Apple computer that is intel based can be used with Snow Leopard. To upgrade from Tiger (10.4) you will need to purchase the Mac Box Set, which includes Snow Leopard, iLife ’09, and iWork ’09.

    It is always wise to have protection. Even with Mac’s being a low target of viruses. Typically you can pick up a computer virus although, it might not affect your Mac you can pass it on to your Windows Friends/Co-workers. Rather you use Snow Leopard or any other version of Mac OS you should consider an antivirus software. However, I would not rush out in panic.

    Snow Leopard is Intel-only, and your G5 is powered by a non-Intel processor. If you’d like to upgrade your system, Leopard is a very good choice and does work on PowerPC processor Macs. I believe you can still purchase Leopard through various stores that sell Apple products and software. It would certainly be worth it!

    Otherwise, you can look at refurbished or new replacement machines that are powered by an Intel Processor. I highly recommend getting a machine that features a Core 2 Duo processor, and would look at the graphics processor vs. the Snow Leopard tech requirements, so that you can maximize the features that 10.6 offers.

    Yes. This disk is 10.6.3. I received it today. There was label on box stating 10.6.3, so i immediately upgraded my 10.5.8 Leopard and here it is, 10.6.3 out of box.

    -It can prevent possible pirating over the net.
    -It’s a 6+ Gigabyte download; which would require a large server to stream throughout hundreds/thousands of computers.
    -It requires you to walk into the store which provides a chance for the entire Apple experience.

    You have Tiger: the ’4′ in 10.4.11 denotes you are running OSX Tiger. The ’11′ denotes the update number. Just to clarify further, Leopard = 10.5.x and Snow Leopard is 10.6.x. Regarding your requirements, you’ll need to buy the Mac Box Set if you want to upgrade to Snow Leopard and get the latest iPhoto in iLife ’09.

    The first thing I would try is to get an extension for Firefox that will allow it to identify itself as Internet Explorer. That way, you can find out if the system really requires IE. Do a Google search for “firefox spoof user agent” (This forum does not allow me to supply direct links.)

    The only other way to do it without installing Windows is to use Wine. Go to kronenberg.org for more information on this option and to download the software.

    Finally, you can install Windows. There are two ways to do this. The first is to use Boot Camp which is in included with OS X, but that requires a reboot to switch back and forth. I would recommend using Virtual Box which is free from Sun Microsystems. It works like Parallels or VMware Fusion. This allows you to install and run Windows within OS X. You can download it from virtualbox.com.

    Absolutely not. I’ve upgraded my iMac incrementally all the way from 10.0 (the beta version). It was released in September, 2000. None of my content was ever touched.

    Yes you can, but you will loose iLife 08′ because it is not supported on the new OS. If you had Leopard installed first then you would have iLife 09′ and it would do nothing when you installed Snow Leopard. I would recommend buying the the Snow Leopard Pack (which includes, iLife 09′, Snow Leopard, and iWork 09′) if your updating from Tiger. It costs less to do this than to buy Leopard and than Snow Leopard.

    If you click the Apple icon in the menu bar (top left of the screen) and select “About This Mac” a dialogue box will appear. In the description for processor you will see either Intel or PowerPC. (If it’s a new model it will almost certainly be Intel.)

    Going from 10.6.3 to Leopard (10.5) is a downgrade, not upgrade. You would have to use Disk Utility to erase the hard drive before installing the older version of OS X.

    You cannot upgrade a G-3 processor based Macintosh to Snow Leopard. Tiger, 10.4, was the last OS X operating system that could be installed on a G-3 processor based Macintosh. Snow Leopard can only be installed on an Intel based Macintosh.

    Mac OS X is a unique operating system in that it represents a rather successful coming together of paradigms, ideologies, and technologies that have usually resisted each other in the past. It is a result of the trials and tribulations of Apple and NeXT, as well as their user and developer communities. Mac OS X is perhaps one of the best examples of how a capable system can result through the direct or indirect efforts of corporations, academic and research communities, the Open Source and Free Software movements, and even individuals.

    Apple has been around since 1976, and many accounts of its history have been told. If the story of Apple as a company is fascinating, so is the “technical” story of Apple’s operating systems.

    This document discusses operating systems that Apple has created in the past, and many that it tried to create. Through this discussion, we will come across several technologies the confluence of which eventually led to Mac OS X. An important goal of the discussion is to better understand the reasons, and if possible, the rationale behind Mac OS X and its important components. This, in turn, will be helpful in understanding and appreciating the system as it is today.

    My approach in this discussion is to have somewhat high magnitudes of the depth and breadth of historical coverage, as long as I believe the discussion is interesting and relevant from a system design perspective, within reason. For example, while I will briefly describe “the influence of Xerox PARC” and the background of Mach, I will not go to farcical limits and talk about the invention of the transistor, or the discovery of Silicon.
